Vaquero horsemanship traces its roots back to the 15th and 16th centuries when the Spanish arrived in Mexico and began raising livestock throughout Mexico and the American west. And an entire tradition of horsemanship developed around these cowboys or vaqueros and their gear and methods.

This quarter horse is wearing a hand-braided rawhide headstall and bosalita. The soft expression in his eyes is the hallmark of these gently-trained bridle horses.
